We must heal and mature our ego and the only way to do that is to approach the ego with compassion. To be compassionate we must develop our spiritual nature. When we look through the eyes of the Soul,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we are able to discover the love that heals and understands the limited self (ego). Through this understanding we can begin to help the grown-up ego mature into an adult ego and reach a place of inner peace.
A good example of this can be seen in the Church. When the “rules” of the elders were put into law question about the sexual nature the priests such as: When does a Priest have sexual relations if he doesn’t get married? These were just too complicated to think about,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. It was much simpler to just say that priests abstain from all sexual behavior. That was the easy answer and one that has led to a difficult (if not impossible) reality. Look at the mess this “simple answer” has created in the Catholic Church today.
1. Understand Your Arrogance. Arrogance is two sides of the same coin. The “better than” position is easy to understand. The other position isn’t as easy to see, it is the “less than” position of arrogance.
Exploring Your Metaphysical and Spiritual Potential
Metaphysical (Beyond the Physical): Meta means ‘beyond’; Physical—the physical.
The price we must pay to evolve beyond the grown-up ego and become a spiritually empowered adult is to recognize we are enough. We can only feel ‘I’m enough’ once we become conscious of our Divine nature. Like in the Wizard of Oz, the way Dorothy always had the power to return Home, so do we. Dorothy’s journey was to find the great Wizard where she quickly discovered his illusion of being powerful. She was terrorized by the witch. She listened to all of her friends ‘if only’s...’, ‘If only I had a brain, heart,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], courage, etc’. The story of the Wizard of Oz is so powerful and popular because it tells the story of our spiritual journey in life.
The adult ego owns these concepts and begins to bring this ‘enough-ness’ into their daily lives. The adult ego functions from this ‘enough-ness’ within relationships, on the job, and during creative projects. There is no more wasted effort of trying to get that sense of being enough from outer sources.
5. Focuses on being trustworthy. Do you follow through with what you promise yourself you’re going to do, or do you break promises all the time, looking for excuses to avoid responsibility? To build self-trust, we must develop our strength of character, to mean what you say and say what you mean.
How to Heal and Mature Your Ego into an Ally
You must develop your spiritual nature in order to mature the ego into an Adult. The characteristic of the ego at this stage is that of waking up from the trance addiction to uncover its spiritual nature. The adult ego unlike the lesser evolved ego, reunites with its inner power to access the wisdom, creativity and truth from within. The adult ego is born out of seeing the truth within its own delusions.
8. Spends time in solitude, meditation, and self-reflection. The mature ego connects with the present moment by being sensual; conscious of the physical sensations of the moment. It tastes the food it eats and feels the warmth of the sun as it walks down the street. This mature ego lives in the present moment and feels the connection with the Divine.
Soul-utions Challenge:
Seek to break the habit of trying to be understood by everyone. Instead focus on being understanding,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
4. Journal Work. Answer the following questions:

What makes you “better than” other people?
What makes you feel “less than” others?
What is your Ego’s fantasy of personal destruction?
How would you think and feel if you knew that you were whole, complete, and enough just as you are?

Make a list of 5 close friends and write down the qualities they possess of the mature ego. In person or by email express to them how much you appreciate these qualities of their personality. Look to see if the positive qualities you see in them are also within you. Journal about your new understanding of the characteristics of the adult ego.
When you heal and mature your ego, your life begins to transform. The way you view the world shifts and lifts to a higher octave. You simply drop the suffocating anxiety of pretending you’re not good enough and quickly bond with your divine potential. You discover that you are secure, creative, connected, loving, confident, intuitive, and wise—enough. This enough-ness comes from within. You no longer try to “take” or “get” your enough-ness from your relationships with others, your career, or the amount of money you have in the bank. This knowledge becomes internal and it changes everything.
The immature ego does not recognize truth and therefore always lies. Its measures everything only through the five physical senses and has difficulty measuring or valuing anything metaphysical. Every human being is metaphysical by nature. Its valuable to learn what it means to ‘be‘ metaphysical.
Changing the Course of Your Future
Awareness leads to understanding. However, there are two expressions of understanding: 1) the understanding of our mind (intellect), and 2) the understanding of our heart (caring). When we understand from our heart, we open the door to compassion. Compassion is the way to help our ego mature into a spiritually empowered adult ego. Remember this simple truth; our ego seeks to be understood, our Soul seeks to be understanding.

Yet if you let yourself enter into the chaos and complexity and actually read the manual to figure it out you can program your VCR to record shows in the middle of the night or while you’re on vacation. This can add elegance and ease to living life. Strangely enough accepting complexity can lead to an easier existence. That is if you’ll allow yourself to be challenged by complexity instead of frozen.
3. Knows it is worthy of receiving help and feels gratitude toward others. The adult ego wants to share the credit and to work together. It knows that it has limited time and resources and that there are other people who can do things better. The mature ego owns its strengths and knows that there are skills it owns and skills that others may have are better than its own. The mature ego realizes that if someone else is doing something ‘better than you,’ it doesn’t actually make them a better person than you. The adult ego doesn’t feel threatened and is willing to receive help.
Ten Characteristics of a Spiritually Empowered Adult Ego:
For instance the immature ego doesn’t know how to forgive and would rather seek revenge. Forgiveness is a spiritual quality and comes from our Soul. Jesus taught people to forgive, when you are in a place of forgiveness you are functioning from your Soul, your spiritual nature,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not your ego. Forgiveness is a metaphysical concept.
10. Explores and delights in the mysteries of the metaphysical. It seeks to understand the nature of the mind and values its qualities. It monitors its intentions and what it pays attention to. When you stop trying to make life simple and allow for it to be complex, you’re moving into the truth of living life. The truth will set you free. Complexity doesn’t mean difficult! It means intricate, detailed, or having many aspects or factors to consider.

Our metaphysical nature is the most important part of us, because when we change our metaphysical reality then our physical reality changes as well. Our physical reality is an expression and reflection of our metaphysical consciousness.
7. Respects and honors differences. In so doing, the mature ego respects its own uniqueness and knows that it is inherently valuable to all life. It doesn’t question or doubt that it belongs in life and knows it’s an important expression of God-Goddess’ uniqueness made physical.
3. Simplicity versus Complexity. Grown-ups who insist on everything being simple, are the people who struggle the most in life. There is a paradox of simplicity that states; the more you allow yourself and your life to be complex, the easier your life becomes. When you insist that life be simple, you are functioning in your immature ego and your life can quickly become very difficult to live. Our Soul is complex but the ego wants everything to be simple.
Four Techniques to Harness and Mature Your Ego:
2. Moves beyond judgment and criticism into compassion and understanding. The mature ego consciously discerns and evaluates life rather than labeling and judging it. It makes room for a the possibility of some gray area. The adult ego is not fixated on black or white and is more than capable of thinking and understanding within the realm of ‘gray.’
9. Develops the qualities of caring, intimacy and love. It has redefined the limited past definitions of what love is and has developed mature and healthy relationships that start with love for self which then expands to others. It focuses upon being understanding more than being understood.
Metaphysics isn’t a ‘New Age’ concept it is the nature of every human being. What is metaphysical about us? Our spiritual nature (Soul and Spirit) our relationship with the Divine. Our mind is completely metaphysical because it is made up of the beliefs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], attitudes, thoughts, feelings, choices, and decisions we make every day of our lives. The immature ego has a difficult time understanding the most important parts of our reality; our metaphysical nature.
The adult ego is the rarest stage of ego maturity. Few people ever mature their ego to the adult stage. Many people in their sixties and seventies are still in a state of arrested development stuck at the infant or child ego stage. These are the individuals who eye the biggest piece of pie at the cafeteria and always making sure they ‘get enough.’ This is the infant ego’s greed, “I need to get the biggest and the best for myself.”
4. Functions with humility. It looks at each person and event without projecting the past experiences onto the current reality. It allows for people to change. To have humility is to see things as if for the first time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with fresh eyes. Not to assume you “know it all” but to be willing to learn something new from this experience.
The spiritual empowered adult loves the challenge of complexity. What is complex is fun and draws out greater strength and empowerment. We came into life to challenge ourselves, not to shut down and do what we’ve always done. Learn to find the joy of challenge and be willing to enter the magical realms of the chaos of complexity.
Judgment separates us from love and leads to imprisonment of arrogance. Be conscious of judgments of self and others. It takes maturity to open your heart to seek greater compassionate understanding and give yourself the benefit of the doubt. Stop criticizing yourself and start loving yourself. This exercise is to make a list of people you judge. Then write down why you are urged to do this. Is it a way for you to feel superior or ‘better than’ them? If so recognize what you’re doing and forgive yourself.Guided meditations can help you to make deep changes in your mind.
When the ego can honestly think,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], feel and say, “I am Enough” it is functioning from a mature expression. Knowing you are enough, isn’t a position of arrogance, it doesn’t mean you feel ‘better than’ others. Embodying the truth that “I am Enough” isn’t a statement of superiority or inferiority,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it is the simple truth. Feeling “I am enough” is like finally being able to exhale after 40 years of holding your breath. It quickly becomes a surrendering to the goodness, truth, and beauty of who you really are. This is the exhilaration of waking up and reuniting with your truer self.
Regardless of our biological age, our mental-emotional state can be stuck in any one of five immature stages of ego development. By understanding the ego we can begin to approach it with compassion and respect. It can begin to heal and mature and evolve into a spiritually empowered adult.
Adult Ego. The adult ego knows it is enough. It isn’t perfect or ‘better than’ but it feels and functions in life from a place of ‘enough-ness’. The grown-up ego usually hits a crisis point where it must surrender to the Divine. Feeling completely lost and hopeless the grown-up ego finally stops trying and asks for healing from God-Goddess. The immature ego is right, it isn’t enough. When we discover our spiritual nature and consciously align with our Soul we receive love; a love that heals and matures the underdeveloped ego. To succeed in life, to be ‘safe’ in life you need to connect with your Soul and Spirit. This connection allows you to gain access to inner wisdom,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], discernment, creativity, passion, and the intuition of your metaphysical and divine nature.
Both positions, “better than” and “less than” are a form of arrogance. The truth is you are a valuable human being no matter what. Your ego has convinced itself of its insignificance by denying the truth of its spiritual nature and refusing to own its true value. God-Goddess; your Soul-Spirit knows you are a valuable and worthy expression of life, yet your immature ego refuses to accept that. The foolish immature ego is saying that God-Goddess is wrong! I am worthless, not good enough. It is pure arrogance to pretend you know better than God-Goddess. It is the inverse ‘arrogance’ of being “less than.”

Conflicts with people are an inevitable part of life. In fact they are a test for us to learn how to develop our best and strongest character. If you see a conflict as something very uncomfortable and something to avoid, then you probably won’t be inclined to develop the assertive skills to resolve these messy situations effectively. Unfortunately unresolved conflicts seem to come back and haunt us until we face them with courage and a willingness to do something different in working through them. Assertiveness is the only long-range “cure” that works in these situations.
DEALING WITH A CONTROLLING, TOXIC BULLY
Years ago, when I was a prison warden, bullying and passive-aggressive responses were a common problem with both inmates and staff. We went to the University where I had done some graduate work and developed a model of treatment called assertiveness training and successfully applied it to this bullying problem we had in the prison, starting with the staff and working our way to the inmates. In fact, over the length of my prison career, assertiveness was the most effective rehabilitation program, next to the religious programs.
Being effective in changing how people treat you is a difficult skill to learn. First of all we teach people how to treat us by how we act and what we say and do, or don’t say or do, in response to their responses to us. Not saying the right thing or not doing anything usually just continues the undesirable behavior and makes the situation grow worse.
In a sense, conflicts offer us an excellent opportunity to step up to the plate and be our best selves by learning and growing past our fears, worries, and insecurities. However, conflicts make us all feel very uncomfortable emotionally, and the thought of having to risk more discomfort to communicate our feelings and work past the conflict, is not very appealing. We may even lack faith that assertiveness will actually work. It is much easier to retreat into safety or explode into the attack mode. That is probably why most conflicts are more destructive than productive. And that may also be the difference between a good person who achieves reasonable success by sidestepping conflicts and a great person who taps into phenomenal success after working through major conflicts effectively.
First of all,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], at the left end of the spectrum of interpersonal relations, there are “difficult” people, because of their differences from you in the way that they think, operate and communicate. Towards the end of the difficult group, there are “toxic” people who are totally negative, dishonest, hurtful and disruptive. And at the very end of this group there are a few “toxic bullies,” the most difficult, if not impossible people to deal with. These are very unhappy, insecure people who use anger, intimidation and control to build themselves up by making someone else feel helpless. Their motives for doing this are usually pathological and their use of anger is often the ultimate expression of weakness. This anger typically masks fear, shame or guilt about their own insecurities and inadequacies (I secretly wonder if toxic bullies are put on earth to show the rest of us how not to be).
None of these choices are easy to make, because none guarantee a desirable win-win outcome. The first choice requires great courage, hope and belief in what you are trying to do to and a healthy toolbox of skills to change the other person; and the second two demand great sacrifices.

The way things work is that you really can’t change someone else’s behavior. Thoughts drive feelings which result in behavior. If you want to change behavior, you have to do something that prompts the other person to change the way he or she thinks about something that affects you—like the negative impact they are contributing that may not be good for anyone,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including them.
“I have something uncomfortable to talk about but if I don’t get it out I feel like I will explode. I feel unfairly singled-out, mistreated and picked-upon by the things that I am hearing and seeing, and this is all having a very negative impact on me and influencing me to perform poorly. Assertiveness is when you shift blame for how you are feeling from the other person to yourself, in a sensitive, tactful,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and diplomatic way. In fact, the biggest key of applying effective assertiveness is in shifting “You” words to “I” words. A good example of an effective assertiveness statement in an extremely difficult situation—say where a swim coach is bullying, over-controlling and picking on one of her swimmers and it is having a negative impact on performance—is as follows. And by letting a toxic bully—even a parent, coach, employer, teacher, or peer—continue to have control over you by making you feel lousy is something you should consider having the courage to confront and try to change.
The typical response to a toxic bully, especially one in authority,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is passivity—taking the mistreatment, not thinking you have any power to do anything about it, and not even trying to do anything about it until enough is enough and you just quit. If you are in a bullying situation with a toxic person, or someone you know is who is asking for your advice, here are a few points to translate into your own terms to apply in these situations.

Some people focus on details, while others concentrate on seeing the big picture with short summaries. Some are feelers and some are thinkers. Some are mostly concerned about getting results quickly and others have more patience on using the right methods to get to their destination. Some like things in writing while others stick with verbal exchanges. And some prefer to be approached in a direct way,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], while others like more indirect approaches. The most effective way to deliver an assertive message is to know your “audience” and the way he or she thinks and their preferred communication style and then doing it that way.
• Notice what the negative feelings you are having may be trying to tell you. Are you doing something wrong that is making you feel this way? Is the other person telling you something you need to hear apart from the nasty package it is being delivered in? Can this negative situation push you to a positive place,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]?
• The starting point in all this is to take time out to look long and hard at the particular situation you are in to see something positive and of value that you can appreciate,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in order to take the power out of the negative emotionality that has an iron grip over you. In any situation, there is always something positive of value to you that is waiting to be seen as a secret key to unlock the door ahead. Keep looking until you find it.
• The way you look at things has a tremendous effect on the outcomes you get. If you allow yourself to feel like a shamed, hopeless victim in response to someone else’s wrong behavior, nothing much will change. On the contrary, when you see how you may be inadvertently doing something (often nothing) to continue the mistreatment, then you have a valuable clue to change your approach to the other person, which is likely to change that person’s response.
• Some conflicts are not solvable for one reason or the other. The object is to know the abilities and confidence you have, think about how you can apply them to get the best results and then try to resolve the conflict at hand. Then if by chance you don’t get the outcome you want, you can at least feel better towards yourself when you look in the mirror, knowing you did in fact make your best effort. The sad reality is that not all negative situations and people are winnable. But even with unsolvable conflicts such as these which you are forced to quit or leave, it is a good idea to learn something positive from them that will improve your self-esteem and interpersonal competence in the future. All the difficult situations in life are tests offering valuable lessons to make future tests easier to get an “A” on.
It seems that sometimes we oversimplify things or make them more complex then they need to be. The simplicity just on the other side of complexity is worth its weight in gold. This is the case of a simple division of feelings into positive and negative, without going any further. Positive feelings serve the purpose of reassuring us that we are moving in the right direction with our thinking, choices and acting. Negative feelings serve the purpose of alerting us to the possibility that something may not be right in our approach to a situation. The negative feelings are trying to tell us to slow down and rethink things.
You really can’t be very successful in trying to change something you don’t understand completely. Here is an important piece of this puzzle to consider. The way you see a situation has a lot to do with what expectations you have of it. And those expectations often bring their own outcomes, good or bad. The simple law of attraction says that like things attract like things. If you react to a negative person negatively or even neutrally, you always get more negativity and the situation continues.

In all of life there is only one thing that is 100% in your control and that is your attitude. In any given situation you can choose how you behave, what you say,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and how you say it BUT you cannot control the situation. Unfortunately most people do not consciously choose what to do, they just react with conditioned,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], conditional responses. In other words they have a set response to certain conditions and live in a rigid world of "if this, then that". Your attitude in any situation is always the outward display of your inner emotional state.
The next reason that attitude is so important is simply this. Control your attitude and you control your life!
An APE? I hear you ask. What do you mean an APE? Do you want me to monkey around? No,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not at all, although you will find that once you have developed an APE life will be such fun that you might just want to do that. What I mean by develop an APE is to develop an Attitude of Positive Expectancy. Learn the habit of expecting the best because when you have faith in the future you are enthusiastic about the present. There is much truth in the saying "If you think you can there's a goodchance you will. But if you think you can't you most likely won't even try. Todevelop an APE just take a look at you now. You are so much more than you were.Just look at the foundation that you have created and just think what you can build on that. Just remember this. The very act of imagining the future creates the possibility of that future. So imagine wisely and expect the best.
In every situation in your life there is something to be grateful for. Instead of focussing on what is going wrong in your life, and the world in general,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], learn to identify what is going right. And this I will tell you,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], no matter how bad you think the situation is,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there is always something to be grateful for. Remember the saying "Seek and ye shall find" You will find what you look for so learn to look for the good stuff. This is important because it leads to the next stage of Attitude control and that is to develop an APE.
The next great attitude you must develop is an Attitude of Acceptance. The most accurate measure of character is your behaviour when things don't go the way that you want them to. Your reaction to the difficulties of life displays your true character and it is in these times that you need the greatest self-control. All too often our reaction to the situation we are in is based on the fact that we want things to be different to the way they are. This is the fast track to madness. What we have to do is to learn to accept that things are the way that they are. This is the way to greatness. Now, by accepting I don't mean that you condone the situation or that you like it. No. I mean that you have the maturity to accept that what is,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is and cannot be changed. You have the wisdom to realise that it is pointless to waste any energy on trying to change what is by complaining and blaming but that you have to focus all your energies on making the situation the way that you want it to be. Realise that you cannot change the way things are but you can change the way things can be.
Who you are makes a difference. How you are who you are makes a bigger difference. Being Great is an attitude. Being anything less than great, is an attitude. It's your choice as to what attitude you choose. I wish for you an attitude of Greatness.
Why is attitude so important. Attitude is so important because your attitude determines your performance. It's how you feel about yourself, what you are doing, who you are doing it for and/or with, where you are doing it, when you are doing it and why you are doing it, that determines how you do it. Your attitude determines what you will do,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], how you will do it and how you will behave while doing it.

What does being great mean. Well I guess that it means many different things to many different people but for me the concept of being great is the commitment to do everything that you do as well as you can. Do them as if you were great. Just remember that you become great by doing all things great,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not just some great things.
But, what is an attitude? An attitude is a conditioned pattern of thought, a learned emotional habit. You are not born with an attitude to life other than total trust. As a baby you were not sceptical, suspicious, enthusiastic or any of the many other attitudes that you now display. You learned, and developed, these attitudes as you grew and interacted with life and all too often the attitudes that you developed are no longer serving you well. You might find that, instead of your mind being your servant it is now your master and you are slave to it's control. You created the attitudes that you have and now they control you.

Looking back over Wooden's sayings, it's clear that they don't relate only to competitive athletes but rather to all of us who strive for a life of meaning. Some of his quotes come to mind, reviewing recent sporting events that represent more than just games. If you're looking for words of wisdom to offer your children - for sports and for life - here are some tips that spring from Coach Wooden axioms:
2. Treat others with respect, be gracious in victory and in defeat. With his keen sense of moral principles, Coach Wooden would have been proud of Detroit Tiger's pitcher Armando Galarraga and umpire Jim Joyce,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who prevented Galarraga from being credited with a perfect game. When umpire Joyce incorrectly called the runner at first base 'safe,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],' Galarraga accepted the call stoically although, if correctly called an out, it would have earned him a rare perfect game in the record books.
Wondering what all these W's have in common? They provide cases of excellent role models in sports that we can pass on to our children and grandchildren. After witnessing so many instances of poor sportsmanship over the years, it's impressive to have examples of positive behavior by athletes.

1. Do your best with determination and never give up. A grueling Wimbledon first round match lasted over 11 hours, spread over three days. He stressed fundamentals, teamwork and good sportsmanship, using home-grown aphorisms.

What lessons can the millions of children who play soccer across the world take from these championship games? That individual effort as well as teamwork is required to overcome wrong calls and bring about a triumph. Working together over months, even years, creates the energy a team needs to score, providing the counterbalance to Wooden's caveat, "Goals achieved with little effort are seldom worthwhile or lasting."
